The Uganda program is based in Kampala and affiliated with the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at Makerere University, one of Africa’s premier research institutions. The program centers local practices, traditions, technologies, and knowledge production while critically reconfiguring modernity’s power dynamics through sustained academic engagement and faculty mentorship.

Academic Focus

The Uganda program emphasizes research design, decolonial methodologies, and ethical engagement with local contexts. The Young Scholars Program equips students with advanced research skills, including framing contextually grounded research questions, designing projects informed by decolonial ethics, and conducting inquiry rooted in African epistemologies.

The student cohort comprises approximately 50% African students and 50% non-African students, creating a diverse intellectual environment that fosters dialogue across lived experience, disciplinary training, and positionality.

Across all locations, learning extends into neighborhoods, markets, cultural spaces, and public institutions, reinforcing IDEAS’ commitment to community-based education rather than observational study. All students live with carefully vetted host families, including daily meals, private or shared rooms, sustained language practice, and deep cultural immersion under faculty oversight.
